Expertly crafted in Iwami, Japan by Motoshige Pottery, this traditional Suribachi Mortar & Pestle Set is ideal for grinding sesame seeds, spices, herbs, nuts, and preparing fresh dressings, sauces, and pastes. Its elegant design also makes it suitable for serving straight from the kitchen to the table.

The carefully shaped 14.5cm bowl keeps ingredients gathered in the centre for efficient grinding, while each interior ridge is individually hand-finished to firmly grip ingredients with less effort.

Finished with a durable Kimachi glaze, made from natural Kimachi stone, the warm brown interior is a traditional feature of Iwami ware.

A non-slip silicone base keeps the mortar stable during use and helps protect work surfaces, while the matching Japanese beech wood pestle is perfectly sized for comfortable, controlled grinding.

  • Mortar Size: Approx. Ø14.5 × H8 cm
  • Capacity: Approx. 750ml
  • Wooden Pestle: Ø2.5 × L18 cm
  • Material: Ceramic (body), Silicon rubber (non-slip base), Japanese beech tree (Pestle)
  • Mortar: Dishwasher and microwave safe

Fired at high temperatures using the traditional methods of Iwami ware, the ceramic body is exceptionally durable, while the hand-finished ridges maximise grinding efficiency and help release the natural flavour and aroma of ingredients.

Well suited to family cooking or shared meals, the larger size offers versatility while maintaining the refined simplicity of traditional Japanese kitchenware.
